Iran is a country that requires travelers to obey certain rules in relation to clothing. In fact, one of the most frequent questions asked by people traveling to Iran, is about Iran’s dress code, with some visitors concerned about it. However, the dress code for foreign travelers is not that restricted.

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s laws impose restrictions on clothing, particularly, for women. Iranian women must wear Hijab, which means they are required to wear scarves and shawls that cover their hair and loose-fitting clothes that camouflage their body. However, nowadays the Islamic rules about clothing are not as strict as they seem. The style of Hijab is not as severe as before and contrary to some media images, Iranian women enjoy colorful clothes and are very stylish while remaining in accordance with the dress code. Walking in the streets, you will see various colors including colorful scarves, manteaus and clothes for both men and women.

Dress code for Women in Iran:

As foreign tourists, women have to follow the Hijab rules, although the rules are not severe and visitors’ unfamiliarity with the Hijab is taken into account. It should be noted that is not necessary to cover all the hair, some parts of the hair being out of the scarf is normal, but wearing the headscarf is mandatory for all female travelers.

In relation to clothing, the wearing of shorts, short pants, short-sleeved clothes, short skirts etc. are forbidden in public places. Furthermore, sleeveless or short-sleeved shirts, coats, tunics as well as short skirts or see-through leggings or pants should be avoided.

Loose sweaters, tunic or Manteau (jacket/coat) that is long enough to cover the lower waist, is allowed. Jeans, leggings, ripped jeans and loose, long skirts and dresses are allowed so long as they sit right above the ankles.

If you wish to wear a hat or cap, there is no problem, but do not forget that you wear them on your scarf as covering the hair and neck is obligatory.

All types of footwear are permitted including sandals in summer and boots in winter. Additionally, there is no need to wear socks everywhere as nail polish of all kinds and colors is acceptable here.

With reference to religious sites such as Imam Reza holy shrine in Mashhad, Hazrat Masume Holy shrine in Qom or Imam zadeh Saleh holy shrine in Tajrish Tehran, the complete Hijab and wearing Chador (a long piece of cloth covering the whole body from head to ankle) is compulsory. In this case, a white specific chador will be lent to tourists to enable visiting these monuments.

Dress code for Men in Iran:

Dress code for men is fairly simple and they are allowed to wear most types of clothing. However, sleeveless shirts and shorts should be avoided in public places.

In swimming pools, beaches, and sports complex, such clothing is allowed for men.

In summary, Iran is a hospitable country with kind people who make concerted efforts to ensure tourists to experience a wonderful visit. Hence, applying law about Hijab restriction, while enforced, is not too severe to bother tourists. This dress code is only applicable in public places. In indoor places, like hotels or someone’s house, you are free to put on whatever you like. It is worth mentioning that the dress code must be respected upon arrival in the airport.

2-What is the currency in Iran?

The official currency of Iran is RIAL, although the informal unit of money is TOMAN that equals 10,000 RIALS. For example, if the price of Pizza is 50 tomans, it is 500,000 Rials.

3- How can I pay?

In Iran, credit cards and international debit cards such as master or visa cards are not supported. It is easily possible to change money at the airport, banks and exchange offices in the cities or even to carry your money in cash. If the latter feels difficult or insecure for you, there are some companies available to provide you with local debit cards.

It is worth noting however that some shops selling souvenirs can accept master cards, so you might wish to take your card with you while traveling to Iran.

4- What is the best time to visit Iran?

The best time for traveling to Iran is normally from April to May and from September to early November. For instance, in July and August, the west and northwest of Iran due to cooler weather are the best choice mixed with classic route, such as Tabriz, Kurdistan, Kermanshah or Hamedan. The months of November, December, January and February are the best for traveling to south Iran, which due to the areas natural beauty and tourist attractions could be considered as must-see destinations, including Qeshm, Kish, Chabahar, Bushehr and etc.

5- Do I need visa to travel to Iran?

Yes, all tourists need a visa, except for certain exempted countries.
