Comprehensive Guide to Obtaining an Iran Travel Visa

The Iran Travel Visa allows travelers to travel to Iran and journey through the country for a set period, typically up to 30 days.
When applying for an Iran Travel Visa, you will need to provide basic personal information, details of your travel plans, and proof of accommodation. It is important to apply well in advance of your trip to allow enough time for processing. Once granted, the visa opens the door to the diverse experiences Iran has to offer, from its bustling bazaars to tranquil landscapes and ancient historical sites.

Tourists from countries requiring a visa to enter Iran have two options:

  1. First Option: Certain nationalities can apply online without involving a travel agency. This often requires a local sponsor, and the likelihood of rejection is higher.
  2. Second Option: Apply through a travel agency, which is typically more secure and offers a higher approval rate.

Visitors from these countries should ensure that their passports have a minimum validity of 6 months from their arrival date in Iran.

It is important to note that visa-free entry to Iran can be subject to changes based on diplomatic relations and international agreements. Therefore, it is always a good idea to check the latest travel advisories and visa policies from official sources or the Iranian embassy in your country before planning your trip.

For travelers from countries not on the visa-free list, the option of an Iran Visa on Arrival (VOA) is available at several major Iranian airports. This is convenient for tourists who prefer to obtain their visa upon entering Iran rather than going through the application process beforehand.

Important Tips

What You Should Know before Applying

If you want to apply for a visa, please read the following points carefully to avoid any probable case of denial.

Passport Expiration

To apply for all types of electronic visas, your passport should have at least six months of validity, beyond your actual travel date. Obviously, you are not able to submit your application, if your passport is expiring in less than 6 months.

Visa Validity

The Iranian visa sticker displays some information including the validity of visa. Failure to travel to Iran during the validity of visa will prevent you from entering Iran and you will need to re-apply for a visa.

Visa Types

All types of visa defined by the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran can be applied for through the online visa application portal. Notwithstanding, some types of visa for the citizens of some countries should be applied for only in person through the relevant Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Visa Eligibility

The citizens of some countries may not be issued visa to enter the Islamic Republic of Iran due to political and diplomatic considerations. Citizens of such countries shall refer to the relevant Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran for further information.

For your Iran visa application, you need a personal photo that adheres to specific criteria.

  • The photo should be a recent one, taken within the last 6 months.

Passport Copy Requirements

Alongside your photo, you will need a copy of your passport.

How to Obtain Your Visa After the Grand Notice is Issued

Once the Grand Notice is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, you have two options for obtaining your guaranteed visa:

  • Consulate or Embassy Visa: Obtain your visa from the Iranian consulate or embassy that you have named in the Visa Grand Notice Form.  . We recommend applying no later than 2 to 3 weeks prior to your travel date.
  • VOA (Visa On Arrival): Obtain your visa upon arrival at your Arrival airport that you have selected in the Visa Grand Notice Form.

This VOA service is available at several major airports in Iran, including IKA airport (Tehran), Mashhad (MHD), Shiraz (SYZ), Tabriz (TBZ), Isfahan (IFN), Ahwaz (AWZ), Kish (KIH), Qeshm (GSM), Kerman (KER), Urmia (UMH), Bushehr (BUZ), Bandar Abbas (BND), and Larestan (LAR). When applying, you will need to specify ‘airport’ as the place of visa issuance on your form.

Upon arrival in Iran, presenting the visa code at the visa and passport office is a straightforward process and usually quick. You do not have to wait for long hours, and there is a rare risk of being deported as long as your documentation and visa code are in order.

Iran Visa for US, UK, and Canadian Citizens

For Canadians, UK, and US citizens looking to travel to Iran, the visa application process is a bit more involved compared to other nationalities. These citizens must apply for their visa in advance and cannot use the Visa on Arrival (VOA) service. The process requires them to submit a detailed itinerary and be accompanied by a certified tour guide throughout their stay in Iran. Additionally, they must obtain an authorization code from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before applying for a visa at an Iranian embassy or consulate. This process ensures a more structured and guided travel experience in Iran.
